Life

Dometius the Merciful of Râmeț (Romanian: Sfântul Cuvios Dometie cel Milostiv de la Râmeț), born Stelian Manolache, was a twentieth-century Romanian monk, priest, and spiritual father associated above all with the Râmeț Monastery in Transylvania. He is remembered for his charity toward the poor and his work sustaining and rebuilding the monastic community during a period of state repression of monastic life in communist Romania.

He was born on October 15, 1924, in the village of Mărculeşti, in Buzău County, the fourth of twelve children of a working family. After studies at the Theological Seminary in Buzău and a degree in theology at the University of Bucharest, he entered monastic life at Prislop Monastery in 1949, where he was tonsured with the name Dometie and ordained a priest the same year.

From 1959 he served as priest-confessor at Râmeț Monastery and the surrounding parish, where he gathered and guided a community of nuns, carried out missionary work among the mountain villagers of the Apuseni, and laboured to restore the monastery after the community was dispersed under the 1960 measures against monasticism. He reposed at Râmeț on July 6, 1975. The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church canonized him in 2025, as part of the centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate, and his feast is kept on July 6.

Early Life and Formation

According to the accounts of his life, he was born Stelian Manolache on October 15, 1924, in Mărculeşti, Buzău County, into a faithful working family of twelve children, of whom he was the fourth. He attended primary school locally and went on to the Theological Seminary in Buzău, completing it in 1945, and then took a degree in theology at the University of Bucharest in 1949.

He entered the monastic life at Prislop Monastery in 1949, where he was tonsured a monk and given the name Dometie; the sources name the noted confessor Arsenie Boca as his spiritual father there. He was ordained a priest the same year. The accounts relate that he later served at other monastic houses before his long association with Râmeț began.

Ministry at Râmeț

From 1959 he served as priest-confessor at Râmeț Monastery and the neighbouring parish, in the mountainous Apuseni region of Transylvania. He is credited with gathering and guiding a community of young women drawn to the monastic life, and with carrying out missionary work among the mountain villagers of the surrounding area.

His years at Râmeț coincided with severe state restriction of monasticism in communist Romania. After the monastic community was dispersed under the 1960 measures against monastic life, he laboured to keep the work of the monastery alive, and the accounts credit him with reuniting and re-establishing the community when the sisters were able to return in 1969. In 1972 he undertook doctoral studies in theology at Bucharest, which he is said to have completed shortly before his death.

Mercy and Veneration

His common epithet, 'the Merciful', reflects the charity for which he is remembered. The accounts of his life describe his generosity to the poor, relating by tradition that he would give away even the clothing he was wearing to those in need.

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church numbered him among the saints canonized in 2025 in connection with the centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate, fixing his commemoration on July 6, the day of his repose. His relics were placed in the church of Râmeț Monastery in the days before the local proclamation of his canonization, which was celebrated there on July 6, 2025, with the participation of many hierarchs and a large gathering of faithful.
